In the heart of Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district, where the sex ratio stands alarmingly low at 837 females for every 1000 males, a groundbreaking movement is reshaping the lives of local women. Led by the Sangini self-help group, a unique sanitary pad distribution initiative is not only championing health and hygiene but also providing a vital economic lifeline to over a hundred women in the region.
Founded in 2018 by Rekha Shukla and her sister-in-law Rashmi Shukla, Sangini emerged with a modest startup fund of Rs 12,000 from the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) scheme. Armed with a master’s degree in social work and training from a leading NGO, Rekha initiated the sourcing and repackaging of sanitary pads for local distribution.
What began as a small-scale endeavor quickly evolved into a thriving movement as more women joined, enticed by the promise of earning and supporting their communities. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Sangini’s role became even more vital during the devastating second wave.
Recognizing their invaluable contribution, the district administration stepped in to support Sangini’s efforts, providing a vehicle for distributing not only sanitary pads but also face masks, thereby ensuring broader health protection, particularly focusing on women’s menstrual health.
Reflecting on their journey, Rekha Shukla remarked, “Our hard work and dedication paid off. The district administration provided us with a four-wheeler. With it, we distributed sanitary pads and face masks, ensuring overall health protection, particularly focusing on women’s menstrual health.“
The impact of Sangini extends far beyond health. Individuals like Janaki and Vijay Kushwah, who lost their livelihood due to the pandemic, found new hope and sustenance through Sangini. Similarly, Rajni Rajawat and Mamta Sharma navigated financial hardships by joining the initiative, earning a steady income while contributing to menstrual health awareness in their communities.
Through initiatives like Sangini, women in Bhind district are transcending limiting traditions, overcoming menstrual illnesses, and breaking free from financial constraints. As Sangini continues to empower and uplift, it serves as a beacon of hope for women across Madhya Pradesh, paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future.
