Shein to make a comeback in india
Is Shein available in India now?
SHEIN will relaunch in India through Amazon. In June 2020, several popular apps including PUBG Mobile, TikTok, WeChat, Camscanner etc had been banned along with the shopping website. Earlier this month, PUBG Mobile India made a return with a new identity as Krafton’s Battleground Mobile India.
Is Shein getting banned?
Indian authorities have permanently banned 59 Chinese apps, including fashion shopping apps Shein and Club Factory, as well as Tik Tok, due to perceived security concerns.
SHEIN is making a comeback just like PUBG Mobile: But, there’s a catch
SHEIN is set to launch in India via Amazon during the upcoming Prime Day sale. Here’s what you need to know.
Last year, the Indian government announced a ban on hundreds of Chinese apps. These apps included the game PUBG Mobile. While it did leave many fans crying in a corner, the game eventually made a comeback in the form of Battlegrounds Mobile India. Taking inspiration from the success of BGMI, SHEIN is also looking to make a comeback.
SHEIN is a Chinese e-commerce application that offers a wide range of woman’s apparel. The government banned the application in India alongside other Chinese apps that included CamScanner, AliBaba, TikTok and more.
SHEIN is set to launch in India via Amazon during the upcoming Prime Day sale. Amazon is kicking off the Prime Day sale on July 26 and the two-day event will be live only till July 27.
Amazon has created a dedicated page for Prime Day where they have listed the brands that will be a part of the sale. This is where they have silently placed a banner that clearly reads “Prime Day launches SHEIN”.
This means that SHEIN is making a comeback to the Indian shores with the help of Amazon India and not as a separate app.
To recall, SHEIN was one of the first 59 Chinese applications that were banned in India. The list of apps included some really popular apps including TikTok, WeChat, SHEIN, Likee, ShareIt, UC Browser, Helo, among others. These applications were banned back in June, 2020, by the Ministry of Information Technology under section 69A of the Information Technology Act.
NEW DELHI About shein:
Chinese fashion brand Shein is making a comeback in India through marketplace Amazon—a year and a half after the fashion site, popular for its latest styles and accessible price points, was temporarily barred from selling goods in India along with Clubhouse and Ali Express for evading tax rules. The site was also later banned by the Home Ministry as part of India’s crackdown on Chinese apps in 2020.
Chinese shopping sites shipping to India were under the scanner for exploiting a loophole that allowed Indian citizens to receive duty-free gifts and samples, those valued under ₹5,000, from overseas. Several companies were known to be exploiting this provision to evade paying taxes on the parcels. Companies were also labelling the parcels as business-to-business (B-2-B) couriers as opposed to B-2-C.
In December 2019, India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade said that packages marked as gift items received from overseas will be subject to import duties. DGFT’s order caused a temporary setback to shopping sites.
Then, in June 2020, as part of a larger crackdown by the Indian government—several Chinese apps widely popular in India were banned in the aftermath of escalating tensions on the Indo-China border. These included TikTok, Weibo, WeChat, AliExpress, Shein, CamScanner among others. The apps were directed to be removed from Google Playstore and Apple App Store.
Now, Amazon Fashion has listed Shein as part of its Prime Day 2021 sale that is set to go live between July 26 and 27. To be sure, Shein will be listing on Amazon as a seller. Meanwhile, Shein’s own site for Indian shoppers is still unreachable.
Shein had become popular among Gen-Z and millennial shoppers who shipped orders from the site mainly because of low prices and trendy fashion.
