Seva Bharati, Purbanchal: Transforming Education and Healthcare Provision in North East India, backed by Infosys

Where philanthropic organizations are bountiful to grow, Seva Bharati, Purbanchal stands out as a beacon of hope and transformation. This significant non-profit entity has a rich history of service, dedicated to uplifting the underprivileged in the northeastern regions of India, including Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. Founded in 1998 in the vibrant city of Guwahati, Assam, this organization emerged as a result of the collective vision of a group of influential Assamese social workers.

Empowering the Marginalized

Their primary objective was clear from the beginning – to empower and mentor the youth, women, and marginalized segments of society, with a special focus on Tribal and Tea Tribes. This commitment to supporting these communities in times of adversity has been at the heart of Seva Bharati’s mission.

The organization’s dedication to the welfare of Tribal and Tea Tribes, who often face significant challenges, has earned it recognition as a catalyst for positive change. Seva Bharati, Purbanchal believes that by equipping people with the necessary resources, they can actively contribute to the betterment of society and the nation as a whole.

Arogya Mitra Project: Bridging Healthcare Gaps

One of Seva Bharati, Purbanchal’s most impactful initiatives is the “Arogya Mitra” project, designed to foster a nationalistic service culture among the youth. This project plays a vital role in raising health awareness among underprivileged communities and educating them about disease prevention. It identifies and trains young individuals from rural areas, where access to modern medical facilities is limited or absent, in the basics of both homoeopathic and allopathic medicine.

The “Arogya Mitra” Project’s core objective is to provide primary healthcare to rural and underprivileged populations who would otherwise have no access to medical facilities. This initiative ensures that healthcare reaches even the most remote regions where doctors are scarce and medical costs are often unaffordable.

Partnerships and Collaborations

In 2017, Seva Bharati, Purbanchal launched the Niramaya project, supported by Infosys, the Foundation for Integrated Support and Solution (FISS), Guwahati, and the National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj North East Centre (NIRD & RD, NEC), Guwahati. This project extends its reach to 200 villages across several Assam districts, appointing one Community Field Officer (CFO) for every five villages.

The Digital Revolution in Healthcare

The primary objective of the Niramaya Project is to enhance healthcare services in specific areas of Assam, extending support to those facing hardship. This initiative aligns with the objectives of the National Digital Health Mission (NDHM), which seeks to revolutionize healthcare in India through technological advancements.

NDHM aims to significantly improve healthcare services across the country by harnessing the potential of digital technology. Project Niramaya, using technology like the online system AMRIT, plays a crucial role in this transformative endeavor. AMRIT allows for the electronic storage of patients’ medical histories, enabling medical data analysis and online communication between patients and healthcare providers.

Project Niramaya extends its reach to the aspirational districts of Barpeta, Darrang, and Baksa, where healthcare facilities are limited. It focuses on upgrading telehealth facilities’ internet connectivity, training healthcare professionals in digital tools, and enhancing the robustness of technology like AMRIT.

The path ahead for Project Niramaya exemplifies the transformative potential of digital technology in healthcare provision, particularly in underserved areas. By prioritizing these regions, advancing available technology, and training healthcare professionals, this project serves as a promising model for improving healthcare delivery.

In a country like India, where a significant portion of the population lacks access to quality healthcare, initiatives like Project Niramaya offer a glimmer of hope for underprivileged communities. Through their relentless efforts, Seva Bharati, Purbanchal, is on a mission to ensure that no one loses their life’s savings in the pursuit of medical treatment, offering a lifeline to those in need.
